For Child Care Providers

Child Care ProviderChild care health consultants are certified health professionals. A solid health care background combined with child care health consultation training enables these professionals to assist child care providers in improving the health, safety and overall quality of centers through consultation, staff training and resource referral.  The idea of employing a child care health consultant is relatively new.

However, child care centers employing consultants have shown improvements in daily operations, their staff members, and the physical environment of the centers. Based on standards from the publication, Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards Guidelines for Out-of-Home Programs (CFOC), child care health consultants who can advise and provide technical assistance on child health issues are recommended for child care centers or family child care homes.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has adopted a new standard which states, "the [childcare] program has and implements an agreement with a health consultant who is either a licensed pediatric health professional or a health professional with specific training in health consultation for early childhood programs."
