Gordon County Health Department to close Thursday, February 14, for emergency-preparedness exercise

February 12, 2008, Calhoun, GA:  The Gordon County Health Department will be closed Thursday, February 14, so staff can participate in an emergency-preparedness exercise, which is being sponsored by Public Health. The health department will resume regular business hours Friday, February 15.

New immunization requirements

April 19 , 2007, Calhoun, GA:  New state immunization requirements to help protect children from preventable childhood diseases have been announced, according to Northwest Georgia Public Health Immunization Coordinator Marie Smith. The new requirements go into effect July 1, 2007 and include two new required vaccines and additional doses of two existing required vaccines, according to Smith.

Calhoun nurse receives prestigious state BAAR health award

January 17, 2007, Calhoun, GA:  Calhoun, GA: Sandy Benton, a board of education school nurse at Calhoun Middle School, has been honored by the Live Healthy Georgia campaign for exemplary leadership in promoting the benefits of physical activity in the State of Georgia. Benton was presented the BAAR award, a sculptural rendering of the Georgia Peach handcrafted by Atlanta’s Fräbel Glass Art Studio of molten boron glass, at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting at The Depot. According to her nomination, Benton was “personally instrumental in creating and developing innovative health-and-wellness programs for students and staff in the Calhoun Middle School.” “Sandy spent much of her personal time working hard to make sure all this would happen, and she is truly an inspiration to us all,” said Northwest Georgia Public Health’s Annette Clairy while presenting the award.
